KABC is taking part in the #GivingTuesdayNow movement to celebrate Older Americans and their incredible resilience. You can give back to older Americans who continue to inspire generations to unite and persevere. Through countless hardships, from World Wars to Civil Rights, older Americans have shown us the true power of community in the difficult moments of our history.
Today, older Americans face a new hardship. They are most at-risk during the coronavirus. They need strong voices to shape the emergency responses and public policies which will result in life or death for many elders.
1.5 million older Americans live in adult care homes that have become hotspots for the virus. Their families are not allowed to visit. Each day professionals trained to care for elders are also falling ill. 50 million of our older neighbors are challenged to find the critical resources needed and transportation which does not increase risk of exposure to attend medical appointments.
Strong voices are needed to speak for:
- Medical Strike Teams to eradicate infections that are blooming in adult care homes causing death for many
- Teams of trained Care Staff to step in and provide the hands-on care frail elders need when paid care staff are not able to work due to virus exposure
- Community Response Teams to bring food and supplies for older adults who receive care in their own home
- Individual transportation to medical appointments that won’t increase an elder’s risk of exposure to the corona virus as public transportation does
Help KABC turn up the volume of older adult voices so that decision-makers do right by Older Americans
Even as they face these hardships, older Americans continue to inspire us to rise together and help others in need. Talented older women across the nation have begun making masks for those in need, and even use social media to make tutorial videos for others. One of our own – a retired Kansas farmer – made headlines for sending his extra N95 mask to New York for a healthcare worker in need.
Older Americans are vital to our communities. Their time, experience, and talents benefit family, peers, and neighbors every day. In this time of need, join KABC in celebrating the strength and resilience of older adults, and advocating for their safe, compassionate treatment during this global health pandemic. Donate now, start your own fundraiser for KABC, or contact us to learn how you can advocate for older Americans this #GivingTuesdayNow and all of Older Americans Month.
